Walk together for World Refugee Week

Walk Together' is an opportunity for Australians in every capital city and other centres to join together in solidarity with asylum seekers, refugees and other new Australians.

On 8 June in Brisbane a diverse range of Australians will walk in unity, symbolically calling for an end to the politics of division and making a positive statement for multicultural diversity.

In Brisbane this walk forms part of the Multicultural Development Agency's annual Lantern Parade Walk for Refugees.

The lantern represents a positive metaphor for community optimism and hope throughout the world…

In 2011, more than 3,000 people participated in a walk of solidarity in support of Queensland’s refugee community.

As a symbolic statement, it succeeds in uniting our leaders, everyday Queenslanders and refugee communities in a very public gesture of support and welcome for refugees.

At the same time it provides a platform where refugees can visibly showcase their presence and contribution as citizens and members of our shared community.

The positive representation of refugees and their interaction and acceptance in Queensland contributes a powerful alternative story that counters some of the negative stereotyping that has come to dominate some of the public debate about refugees in recent times.

The significance of this positive message of welcome for refugees themselves cannot be underestimated.

Walk Together is an initiative of Welcome to Australia and supported by Amnesty International Australia, the Refugee Council of Australia, the Settlement Council of Australia, the Diversity Council of Australia, the Federation of Ethnic Community Councils of Australia, the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), Mission Australia and many more…

Everyone is welcome to walk together from The Cultural Forecourt at South Bank Parklands to Suncorp Piazza where a community concert will be held, with an array of entertainment.
