Pesta Rakyat (Party of the People) 2013
Pesta Rakyat (Party of the People), the largest annual Indonesian event in Brisbane, returns to celebrate the richness and diversity of Indonesian culture.
Get to know the cultural gems of Indonesia. Step into a dynamic Indonesian market atmosphere complete with colourful decorations, costume, music and dance.
During the day take a workshop in Saman dance and Angklung music — both recognised as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage icons and performed to celebrate important occasions. Saman is a fastpaced rhythmic dance (also known as Dance of Thousand Hands) originating from the Gayo people of Sumatra. Angklung is a musical instrument made of bamboo with music evoking emotions both sweet and sad. Try your hand at traditional games, and enjoy delicious delicacies including beef rendang, satay, gadogado and many more.
The theme for this year’s festival is the Pandawa Lima, the five characters from a traditional Indonesian fable about the kingdom of Mahabharata. In the evening these characters will come to life on stage in a show that combines traditional theatre and live musical performances.
Show tickets start at $20
