Orpheus and Eurydice

Presented by Judith Wright Centre, Blue Roo Theatre Company and Opera Queensland's Open Stage

One of the greatest operatic love stories of all time, Orpheus and Eurydice, returns to the stage this December #atthejudy. This thrilling collaboration reunites the awe-inspiring Blue Roo ensemble with five of Opera Queensland's leading singers in a brand new English translation of Gluck's opera, along with a live orchestra of outstanding local musicians.

The power of Gluck’s classic opera is the emotional journey of the main characters, Orpheus, Eurydice and Cupid portrayed by OperaQ's principal vocalists. The Blue Roo ensemble accompany OperaQ as the chorus of Nymphs, Shepherds, Furies, and Blessed Spirits. The Blue Roo ensemble embodies the emotional journey of the main characters and portrays it through gesture and physicality to heighten the effect of this deeply moving story. This is just one of the many ways in which OperaQ and Blue Roo continue to redefine inclusive community engagement.

SYNOPSIS

At Eurydice’s funeral, nymphs and shepherds lament her loss, and her husband, Orpheus, is inconsolable.  He reproaches the gods for their cruelty, and in reply Cupid arrives to tell him that the gods have heard his weeping.  They will give Orpheus permission to bring back Eurydice from the dead, but only if he doesn’t look at her until she is in the land of the living.  If he does, he will lose her forever.

Orpheus encounters demons and furies on his journey through the underworld, and calms them with his music.  He then enters the Elysian Fields where the blessed spirits return Eurydice to him.  As the reunited couple tries to leave, Eurydice asks why Orpheus won’t look at her, and when he continues to refuse, she becomes so upset that he turns to comfort her, and at that moment she dies once more.

Cupid returns to comfort the distraught Orpheus, and rewards his obvious fidelity by restoring Eurydice to life once more.

The opera ends in a celebration of the power of love.
