Mulatu Astatke and The Black Jesus Experience

Ethiopia’s most influential musician, Mulatu Astatke, returns to Brisbane following highly successful shows at some of Europe’s most well-known summer festivals.

Astatke is the godfather of ‘Ethio-jazz’, the infectious music dating back to the 1960s that combines Latin jazz and early soul and funk with traditional Ethiopian harmony. From the late1960s through to today, Astatke’s global mark on music has been phenomenal.

Leading The Black Jesus Experience, vocalist Enushu was only a child when she began singing for her local community in Ethiopia. After being forced to take refuge in the Congo, Enushu migrated to Australia, bringing her hauntingly beautiful compositions inspired by a remarkable life and the unique vocal traditions of Ethiopia. Join these remarkable musicians as they team up for an evening of grooves, jazz and soul.
