Mobile States - Opal Vapour

Against a shimmering terrain of shadow and sand, the stories of mountains, bones, and ghostly rivers are danced and sung in a contemporary ritual inspired by ancient Java.

Created across two countries – Australia and Indonesia – Opal Vapour uses elements of Javanese Wayang Kulit shadow puppetry to explore powerful physical and internal states while balancing moral and spiritual aesthetics.

Invoking classical Javanese court-dance and instilled with the mystical influence of an Indonesian trance-possession ritual, Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal’s sinuous transformation is held by Ria Soemardjo’s pure voice and an evocative score suggestive of Javanese gamelan.

Performed in the moment, both artists are transported through time by Paula van Beek’s sublime lighting landscapes and haunting shadow play.

Toured by Performing Lines for Mobile States with the support of the Australian Government through Playing Australia and the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
