La Pasión Del Flamenco

The Australian Council for Europe (ACE) will celebrate all things Español at the Queensland Art Gallery's 'Portrait of Spain' exhibition on Saturday, November 3rd.

Guests will enjoy the flavours, music, art and culture of Spain with tapas, dinner, traditional music, dance performances and an exclusive guided tour of the exhibition.

“Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado” has been specially curated for the Queensland Art Gallery by the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid (the Prado).

It is the largest and most significant international loan the Prado has ever undertaken, and is also the first exhibition from their collection ever to be shown in the Southern Hemisphere.

“Everyone is in love with Spain at the moment,” said ACE president Elfi Massey-Vallazza. “Iberian dishes and tapas are the fastest growing popular cuisine,” she said. “We have all embraced the spirit of Hemingway, the bullfight and El Cid!”

Rick Stein’s four part series on Spain, which aired recently on ABC TV, has captured our imagination with his journey through the flavours of this sun drenched country.

The unique Spanish-inspired menu for this event was created by Josh Lopez, Executive Chef, QAGOMA and will feature classic Spanish flavours and dishes such as chorizo, shellfish, saffron, pimento, manchego cheese, purple garlic, jamón ibérico, paella, churros and fragrant oranges.

The evening will commence with some traditional tapas, featuring plump olives, anchovies and fruity oil with rustic breads. Originally served with the gutsy tempranillos and dry sherrys of the La Mancha region, tapas will kick start the evening of Spanish sensual delights.

A selection of Spanish and other European wines will be savoured during the sit down dinner, which commences at the conclusion of the guided tour.

Entertainment for the ball, which will be held at the ‘Watermall’ of the Queensland Art Gallery, includes all the sounds and sights of Spain.

A world leader in Flamenco dance Antonio Vargas will be joining us from Singapore especially to perform at La Pasión Del Flamenco. Maestro Vargas played the role of Fran’s father in the movie Strictly Ballroom. Director Baz Luhrmann selected Antonio to star in
the movie, as he was already an established star and acclaimed in the Flamenco world.

Renown Australian Flamenco Guitarist Andrew Veivers, a popular guest at music festivals as part of gypsy style groups, will be joined by a Spanish dance group performing sevillinas. The Eddie Gazani Quintet entertains at gigs all around Brisbane with their thrilling Brazilian and Spanish rhythms, and will olé the night away.

“The evening will be a celebration of Spain and a chance for the guests to capture the duende,” said Elfi. “That is the soul and heart of Spanish music, food, wine, and art.”

Olé! Olé! Olé!

Proceeds from the event will support QAGOMA Toddler Tuesday program and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
