Golden Days – Mini Festival
Music has always been at the heart of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
At a time in Queensland’s history when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples weren’t even recognised as citizens, venues such as Brisbane’s Boathouse were pivotal in providing Indigenous communities with their own sense of identity and purpose. Music venues and events created opportunities for community to come together to dance, sing and sometimes fall in love.
At State Library of Queensland, come and relive the days when the music was brassy and the dance halls were alive, and celebrate the important role music plays in Indigenous communities.
Learn the steps at dance classes looking back to the 40s, 50s, and 60s, then step out onto the dance floor in your finest, remembering those Golden Days of dancing in style! Enjoy live performances by The Ragtag Band and mesmerising moments from Steven Oliver’s Black Queen, Black King in the Red Box.
