From Waste to Treasure – Upcycling 101
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
Australia produces over 43 million tonnes of waste every year. Much of this ‘waste’ has had a previous life, it has its own story and has a ‘material’ value. Upcycling looks to capitalise on this material value and turns what would normally be considered as waste into new and different products of equal or increased value. Once you start upcycling, you will see potential for new products in everything around you, hopefully, it’ll also make you think about how and what we consume, and then ‘throw away’.
WHAT WILL WE COVER?
This workshop will give you a chance to make your own upcycled herb-planter from ‘waste.’ Instead of making something which will just be ‘thrown away’ again later the herb planter is a net-positive product; something that over the course of its life will produce a positive benefit for the environment. We will provide all of the tools, the plans and the materials: all you need to bring is your enthusiasm and willingness to learn something new!
WHO WILL BE TEACHING?
Rob Arcidiacono is a product designer by trade, who has also worked around the world in various capacities in the international development, agriculture and manufacturing industries. His newest venture, founding Madefoward, is a Brisbane based social design business that will see the release of a range of designer products made entirely from upcycled materials. They’ll be supplying the materials and plans for the class, and it’s Rob’s way of sharing what he has learnt about upcycling with all of you.
