David Paulson 'Re-reflections' [New paintings!] June 2011
Occurs every week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday
‘Re-reflections’ comprises a suite of 16 new paintings by well-known Queensland artist and teacher, David Paulson, incorporating smaller scale works of a still life genre. The ‘act of seeing’, rather than the creation of meaning, continues to be a central ideology in Paulson’s work.
While abstracted landscapes and still life images are frequent subjects of Paulson’s work, he rejects the labels ‘landscape painter’ or ‘abstract artist’. Instead, Paulson claims that reality itself is abstracted, with his scenes of photo-realistic creek beds and kaleidoscopic minutiae embodying this belief. “I am not abstracting anything” says Paulson, “I’m actually perceiving it as being abstract”.
Paulson’s work also reveals hidden paint layers where he has sanded back sections of works, symbolising his value of the unrestricted process of both art-making and ‘seeing’.
FireWorks Gallery will continue to show Vincent Serico: Some People are Stories limited edition folio as well as a selection of stock from the Eclectica exhibition series.
> The Opening event for David Paulson ‘Re-reflections’ will be held on Wednesday 1st June 6-8pm, featuring a performance at 7pm by local pianist and composer Alex Ranieri.
