Brodsky Quartet: The Shostakovich Cycle

The pre-eminent interpreters of Shostakovich in the world, The Brodsky Quartet will perform the entire Canon of his string quartets as part of this year’s Queensland Music Festival.

Shostakovich was a man completely and utterly emotionally connected to his music. The 15 string quartets – collectively thought of as one of the great works of 20th Century art – communicate his inner life as well as mirroring the highs and lows of life in Soviet Russia.

The cycle reflects his stylistic evolution across the years – from youthful brash humour and experiment through introverted melancholy and nationalistic fervour to defiance and bleakness – a compelling life and death battle of ideas, truth, ideology and existence. Experiencing them as a complete cycle gives the listener a profound insight into Shostakovich’s life.

The UK-based Brodsky Quartet is as flawless as it is engaging.  Since its formation in 1972 the Brodsky Quartet has performed over 2,000 concerts on the major stages of the world and released more than 50 recordings. The Quartet has toured extensively throughout Australasia, the Americas, South Africa and Europe, and its music is regularly recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio.

Renowned for its energy and craftsmanship, The Brodsky Quartet has attracted numerous awards and accolades, taught at many international chamber music courses and held residencies in several music institutes, including the University of Cambridge. Members of the Quartet are currently International Fellows of Chamber Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and have been awarded Honorary Doctorates at the University of Kent and University of Teesside.

This is your chance to experience five achingly beautiful performances across three days in the intimate Visy Theatre as the Brodsky Quartet brings Shostakovich’s intensely personal works to life in a manner unmatched by any other.
