A Night in the JOL: Bittersweet Queensland
2013 marks 150 years since the arrival of South Sea Islanders in Queensland. Today, more than 20,000 descendants identify as Australian South Sea Islanders and continue to enrich Queensland’s cultural diversity with their unique identity, spirituality and history.
Dr Kate Evans, together with Imelda Miller, Assistant Curator of Torres Strait Islander and Pacific Indigenous Studies at Queensland Museum, and John Waldron, Curator of The Australian South Sea Islanders exhibition and Project Coordinator of ASSI 150 SEQ, will share their personal and professional experiences of telling sensitive, confronting, and powerful stories of Australian South Sea Islanders.
Prior to the talk, enjoy a curator’s tour of The Australian South Sea Islanders exhibition in The Studio from 5pm. Please note - audience members will be required to cloak all bags to ensure the safety of State Library’s collections.
Free, bookings required.
