'A Brief Crack of Light': An Exhibition by Eva Richards
Occurs every week on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday
This exhibition will host Eva’s realism works from 201,4 in which she uses a variety of media on both board and paper.
Eva has been heavily influenced in her work by the painters of the Renaissance and the techniques of the Flemish Old Masters. This influence is not only in terms of technique and composition, but in the symbolism often woven into the subject matter itself or the shadows surrounding it, reminding the viewer of the glorious brevity of life.
Her botanical subject matter reveals its transient beauty under different lighting effects. Whether it be brightly illuminated or backlit to reveal inner structure, each plant is intensely examined and depicted. Many of her paintings use the ‘grisaille’ painting technique with which a monochrome underpainting is over-glazed with layers of translucent paint. This technique works particularly well with botanical subjects as it allows the artist to capture the luminous beauty of plants, particularly when contrasted with shadow, and to celebrate their essence and vitality.
