Hair Transplants The modern day hair transplant procedure takes hundreds of single follicles (each carrying about 3 hairs) from the permanent area on the back of the head and redistributes them to the balding area on top. The follicles are realigned to copy the original angle and direction, to give you a natural restoration. The hairs then continue to grow for the rest of your life. Because hair loss is usually an ongoing process, the patient can need several procedures over a period of time. We also often use prescribed medication to help minimise future hair loss and the need for several operations. The procedure is labour intensive and takes several hours. It is usually done under a light sedation "twilight" anaesthetic. The patient can be back at work within a few days but it takes up to six months for the hair to grow a reasonable length. There is often a follow-up procedure done at this time to add density
