SHORT+SWEET Theatre Festival 2012

SHORT+SWEET Theatre Festival 2012, running from 1 – 19 August is back and bigger than ever!

Short and sweet festival logoIn its fourth successful year in Queensland SHORT+SWEET Theatre Festival Brisbane+Gold Coast will host 30 writers, 20 directors, 12 Independent Theatre Companies and 100 actors at The Loft (QUT Creative Industries) in Brisbane and the Gold Coast Arts Centre.

Brisbane will host 20 plays and the Gold Coast 10 plays before the Gala Final. At current ticket prices that’s under $3 per play!

Audiences are guaranteed 10 plays a night and no play will last more than 10 minutes; with attention spans shrinking this is great news – everyone loves a short night at the theatre! They also get the chance to be part of the judging process.

SHORT+SWEET affords budding playwrights the opportunity of seeing their work come to life on stage –emerging actors, directors and local Independent Theatre Companies also have their chance of being seen in a professional environment by industry experts. It’s also about uncovering and developing new writers. The festival believes in the validity of the ten minute theatre form and that ten minute theatre works can stimulate, move and entertain audiences as effectively as longer theatre forms.

Sean Dennehy, SHORT + SWEET Queensland Festival Director says…

“By expanding the home of SHORT + SWEET from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, it will build a creative hub in all of these locations. The festival always leaves behind a kernel of creatively that can continue to grow in a community and I hope to expand SHORT + SWEET further into regional Queensland in the coming years.”

The SHORT+SWEET franchise (since 2001 – as it started out in the late 90’s as the ‘biggest little play festival’) has expanded throughout Australia in recent years and now includes festivals in Sydney, Canberra, Central NSW, Brisbane, Melbourne, Rockhampton and Newcastle. This year, SHORT+SWEET will also have an international programme with festivals in Singapore, Malaysia, Taipei, Auckland, Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai.
