The Verdi Requiem – Celebrating Verdi’s 200th Anniversary

Opening concert event of Italian Week and Grand Finale of the Verdi Celebration in the 4MBS Festival of ClassicsCelebrating Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th anniversary featuring Rosario La Spina in Brisbane’s newly refurbished City Hall. With Jacqueline Mabardi, soprano, Georgia Hawes, contralto, Rosario La Spina, tenor, David Wakeham, baritone,Brisbane Chorale and Brisbane Syphony Orchestra conducted by Antoni Bonetti.

The Verdi Requiem is one of the most thrilling and exciting choral works – a setting that is operatic in its approach. Most reviewers say that about the work, but it is only when you are seated in the concert hall with the orchestra and choir blazing away and the soloists soaring over the orchestra that it really hits you. It’s a remarkable achievement by a composer who had no strong religious beliefs – to create a setting of the Requiem which is truly inspiring.
