Don’t forget your mask as the Down Syndrome Association of Queensland Inc host the DS Gala Ball 2008 Masquerade! The evening’s festivities are being staged at the Boulevard Rooms, Rydges Hotel, South Bank and will kick-off at 6:30pm with cocktails and mingling on the Terrace. Held on the 18th of October from 6:30pm, the DS Gala Ball is the closing event of Down Syndrome Awareness Week. It is a valuable opportunity for members, sponsors and the wider community to come together and celebrate achievements through the Executive Committee Awards. To raise funds through an array of games, silent auction and the raffle and get to know one another on the dance floor with Central Sound Machine supplying an energy-filled musical repertoire. Now in its second year the DS Gala Ball is a memorable occasion to enjoy with friends, over a three-course meal, fine wine and fundraising. Tickets are $120.00 a head and can be purchase by contacting the DSAQ Office on 3356 6655. The dress-code for the evening is black tie for the men and cocktail/after five/evening gown for the ladies and don’t forget your mask!

Community Notice Board : ACS 'PIGNIC IN THE PARK' - Animal Awareness Event/Family Day Out

Local non profit animal sanctuary hosts upcoming major animal awareness and fundraising event ‘Pignic in the Park‘.

Where: Teralba Park, Everton Park, QLD – Sunday, November 9th 2008

The Australian Cavy Sanctuary (ACS) a non profit and non funded animal rescue organization will be hosting the second ever annual animal awareness event and family fun day “Pignic in the Park” at Teralba Park in Everton Park. The event aims to raise awareness of current animal welfare issues including the correct care of small animals.

It will be attended by many organisations with similar aims including: RSPCA QLD, Animal Liberation, Pet café, Oxbow Hay Company, The Dapper Rat, Pet Rescue, Greencross Vets, Friends of the Hound, The Pet Directory, and Natural Animal Care.

“In the past year ACS has cared for and found loving homes for over 600 guinea pigs and other small animals. Half of these were from mistreatment or rescue cases. We have undertaken rescue operations for as many as 150 animals at a time. Severe cases involving large numbers or very sick Guinea Pigs can stretch our resources to the limit. We will use any raised funds from our upcoming event to expand and improve our care facilities as well as to further our goal of purchasing land on which to construct a large scale shelter facility” said Jessica Proietti.

On the day there will be a massive Guinea Pig Pignic on the parklands where members of the public are invited to bring their Guinea Pigs to the park for the event (please contact ACS for Guinea Pig health and safety guidelines). Their will also be a Christmas Theme to the event along with educational and fun games for the kids among other educational displays including a healthy food eating contest for the guinea pigs, sac races and bush dancing! On the day Irish
Folk/Australian band “Black Heather” will be performing and their will also be many pet themed and product stalls, food stalls, Jumping Castle for the kids, kids Christmas coloring competitions, ACS Mascot will be dressed up as Santa and will be arriving for Family Christmas Photos, raffles, educational speakers on stage, live activist/educational display ‘THE TANK‘, and a sausage sizzle to raise funds for ACS.
ACS is a non-profit, non-funded organization managed entirely by a dedicated team of shelter managers and volunteers who are passionate about the welfare and awareness of small animals and to furthering the correct care and humane treatment of all animals. Education, raising awareness and immediate relief are ACS primary objectives.
