Brisbane Taxis
Yellow Cabs (13 19 24) and Black and White Cabs (13 10 08) are the two officially recognised services for Brisbane and surrounding areas. Both companies operate on a 24 hour basis. Taxi ranks are located throughout the Brisbane CBD, in other busy areas (such as shopping centres and cafe strips) and if there's no rank nearby you can hail a cab (if the light near the sign on the roof is on it means the car is available for hire) from any street — although the busier the street, the greater your chances of getting a taxi quickly.
In Brisbane the Queensland government regulates the taxi fares. A typical ride will attract maximum fares such as those below:
Booking fee: $1.00 (phone or electronic bookings)
Weekday flagfall: $2.50 (Monday to Friday, approx. 7am to 7pm)
After hours flagfall: $3.70
Distance: $1.38 per kilometre
Waiting time: $0.56 per minute
Return to Boundary fares
If you hire a taxi 40km or more outside a taxi's licensed area, you may be charged an additional 70c per kilometre for the driver to return to the taxi's licensed area. For example, you would expect to pay extra if you caught a cab to the Gold Coast, to cover the driver returning to Brisbane.
Brisbane Airports and Transit Centre
An additional $1.00 fee is charged for all taxis leaving the Roma Street Transit Centre, and $2.00 if from Brisbane Domestic and International Airports.
